Since early 2025 it has been discouraging to hear of many stories about small or medium sized businesses not trusting a marketing agency due to bad experiences with other agencies my size or larger.
Then there’s this AI skepticism, a lack of trust of what many people do not even understand, and for anyone using it. This is nonsensical.
I get it though; people are careful about who they hire. Before they say yes, they run through what went wrong last time and ask whether this time will be any different or how are we different. If that is where you are, a short conversation can help. The point is not a sales pitch. The “chat” would be to simply look at what failed, and at what a clearer scope and a real result should look like for your business.
In discovery calls these days, business owners seem to all have a similar story: an agency that overpromised, a campaign with no number they could defend, a retainer that ended in silence. By the next conversation they are not shopping for creativity. They are trying not to be burned again. That caution is rational. It is also costly because sound work waits while suspicion does the screening.

Good people helping good people still holds. It is simply harder to hear. When trust is thin, a philosophy sounds like a pitch. Evidence has to arrive earlier: clear scope, plain language about what will and will not move, and a willingness to decline work that cannot be delivered. Clients remember the outcome long after they forget the presentation.
Marketing with AI & Human Trust
AI does not create trust, and it does not destroy it. People do both. The AI tool can draft, research, test different authentic angles, and most importantly for us, speed up our production. It cannot know the client, stand behind a claim, or explain why a recommendation is worth the spend. Trust still attaches to a person who will answer when the work is questioned.
Fear treats every use of AI as a replacement for judgment. Hype treats every output as finished work. Neither is accurate. A message drafted with AI and reviewed by someone who knows the market can be clearer and faster. A message shipped without that review joins the content people already ignore. The difference is accountability, not the software.
That difference is easiest to see on a real problem: a live marketing campaign that is not performing, or a brief that has stalled. On that material, it is possible to separate where AI can help, where it saves time on a marketing agencies production queue, and where human judgment still has to carry the result.

Human Expertise in Marketing
Human expertise turns a tool into work a client can trust. We read the market, hear what a prospect actually fears, and help to decide which claim is worth making. AI produces options and makes the tasks move through our project pipeline that much faster. Our marketing expertise chooses among the concepts or drafts AI produces for us, based on our understabding of the field and the business or industry of the client, we set aside the ones that sound smooth but will not hold up, and tie the rest to a result the client can recognize.
That judgment is what gives people confidence in the message. Readers do not trust volume. They trust the sense that someone responsible shaped what they are seeing: the right objection answered, the wrong promise left out, the offer explained in language a buyer understands. That is why a campaign feels specific, and why a client can defend the spend.

AI Brings New Possibilities to Marketing.
We have been using AI for marketing for close to five years – and we love it. In a trust recession, the division of labor is the practical offer: faster production, less cost, and a person who still owns the project deliverable, and measures the outcome properly. Connection makes all this visible. People work with the people who understand why the last engagement failed or worked, who can explain the work without the jargon, and who treats the relationship as something that has to survive the first invoice.
Tools change, but marketing standards should not: do the work, show the results, speak in jargon free language to ensure the client understands what’s going on, and be the partner the next conversation does not have to recover from… it is truly that simple.
